Doyenne Virology Program
Coming soon
The Doyenne Virology Program is made possible through the support of the Hetrick Family in memory of Norma and Frank Hetrick of Maryland.
Doyenne’s Program for Virologists is meant to support and boost the presence of female virologists. By partnering with top universities, Doyenne seeks to vet, prepare and select two (2) Doyenne Virology fellows who will be provided full financial support for master's and/or PhD's in virology, training and devlopment support, mentorship and placement assistance.
Through the elevation of female virologists, we strive to close the gap between men in women in research roles and create an environment of greater innovation, progress, and economic development. Currently, women make up a significantly lower percentage of research field positions than men with potential estimates showing a GDP loss 9% due to lack of diversity (females) in research funding. We hope to make a change by bringing more women in the research field directly as well as a larger effect going forward by inspiring a new generation of female medical professionals who are inspired by our fellows.
What is Virology?
Virology is a scientific discipline that focuses on the study of viruses, their structure, classification, replication mechanisms, and interactions with host organisms. It encompasses various aspects of virological research, including the identification and characterization of different types of viruses, investigation of their genetic material, exploration of viral pathogenesis, and the development of effective methods for virus detection, prevention, and treatment.
Virologists employ a wide range of techniques and tools, such as electron microscopy, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, to gain insights into the intricate nature of viruses and their impact on human health, animal health, and the environment.
Through their dedicated efforts, virologists contribute significantly to the understanding, control, and management of viral diseases, playing a crucial role in safeguarding public health worldwide.
